MOTIVATED by the loss of their mother, the Lyngcoln brothers are not afraid of hard work.
In fact, the trio formed the Annie’s Army Cardiac Challenge team last year, six months after the loss of their mother Annie.
Team spokesman Nick Lyngcoln said the team raised $14,000 through their fundraising activities last year and this year the team had doubled and was aiming to raise $2,000.
The trio of brothers including Peter and Danny (in Brisbane) form the nucleus of the team, along with their father Peter who accompanies them as supporter, and other friends and family members.
“We’ve already done several fundraising events but our big one will be a lunch at Piccolo Cuccina on August 23,” Mr Nick Lyngcoln said.
The Cardiac Challenge is a bike ride from Cairns to Cooktown, raising funds for cardiac services in FNQ. Since inception in 2007, the event has raised $3.1 million and recently contributed to the soon-to-open second cardiac catheter laboratory at Cairns Hospital.
Foundation fundraising and marketing manager Glenys Duncombe said the brothers and their fellow Annie’s Army team-mates, were a credit to Annie’s legacy.
“The prevalence of heart issues in our region, is really quite surprising when you start talking to people. So many of our riders have been personally affected by heart disease either themselves or within their families,” Ms Duncombe said.
“My own father died at a young age of heart disease so I can certainly appreciate the loss that people endure. But the wonderful thing about the Cardiac Challenge is that it really is making a difference to the treatment options available. We believe that people in Far North Queensland deserve the same level of care and treatment as people down south,” she said.
Funds raised this year will go towards a Vivid Echocardiogram ultrasound system for paediatric cardiology and a respiratory ultrasound.
